Beware of Acorn Poisoning!
by: Keith Moreland, Rolla MFA Assistant Manager

We have had a lot of rain this summer, which has made the grass grow fast and made nut bearing trees produce a lot of nuts. To cattle, acorns are like candy to a kid and have the same effect - a belly ache. Your cattle can even die from overindulging in acorns.

If you have cattle on a pasture with lots of acorns, you need to add lime to their feed. Remember to use hydrated lime as it is the only kind that will work. The lime in the feed is like Rolaids® in your stomach. It absorbs the acid in the acorns and lets it pass through the stomach safely. I have been using this feed ration in my operation and it works. Use 335 ground corn; 330 soybean meal; 300 stock salt and 135 hydrated lime. Put it out freechoice and it should work for you, too.

If your cattle are eating 2 to 2.5 pounds per day/per head, you'll need to put 200-250 pounds of lime in your mix. DO NOT MIX WET MOLASSES WITH YOUR FEED! When wet molasses combines with the lime, it will create a big ball of feed. Dry molasses, however, may work for you.

PROPANE NOTICE:

If you check your own propane, PLEASE let us know when the level has reached a minimum of 20%. This gives us time to schedule a truck to come out and add propane to your tank before you run out.

Although we wish we could always provide same-day service, it's not always possible. With the cold weather, you don't want to be without propane, so make sure you don't let your level fall below 20%!
